I'm sure given the chance his next attempt will be a bit more out there. His guitarist, Monte Pittman (Madonna's one time guitarist) and he wrote several songs prior to his Idol appearance. Might check out his performance of Crawl Thru Fire for the Zodiac theater, it's a bit unpolished, but definitely wild. As an interesting aside Our Lady Gaga wrote Fever and was involved in it's production. For a post Idol album it’s definitely good.
