In long: Ever since Blizzard first announced they would be making Starcraft II, I’d been acting like a fanboy whenever some little bit of new information came about it. Then the hype died down a little bit after open beta started back in January so I was a little worried that the game might not be all that amazing. Last week it dawned on me that maybe I should finally pre-order it and get some time off work. I’m very happy to say that there’s no disappointment at all.

Gameplay: On a very basic level, the mechanics of how the missions are played hasn’t changed all that much. It’s still gathering minerals and gasses to build up your base and send forth your soldiers to burn a fiery swath across the Kuprulu sector. However, most mission levels so far have focused on a specific strategy or requirement that keep it from getting stale.

Plot: The first few levels were almost a replica of the original Starcraft’s plot with slightly different dialogue and characters. After the first couple of missions though, it took off on its own. You have a degree of choice for the order in which you do the missions. I’ve read that eventually several missions will be excluded based on decisions made earlier in the game. In between the actual missions you hang out at your bar and later your ship and can go to different areas to talk to the supporting characters, purchase upgrades, see news events and even play a mini-game based on an old shooter arcade game (the name escapes me, sorry. If anyone who’s played it knows, please tell me).

Voice acting: Not bad for the most part, some of the dialogue is truly terrible. Specifically, the character Ariel Hanson needs to be put on the front lines. Or at least her script writers. Maybe it changes later, but almost every other character is fairly strong willed and confident while she’s this little flower of a scientist who’s all empathy and sharing feelings and is out of tune with the tone of the rest of the game. Another supporting character, Egon Stetmann, who can be spoken with in the Lab sounds VERY much like Sokka from the Avatar: The Last Airbender show. After some checking, I couldn’t verify this though. Only that a guy named Scott Menville who did ‘Additional Voices’ for both this game and Avatar is listed but uncredited anywhere else I looked. Anyone else know anything about this?

Graphics: While a lot of the mission maps look like just a spiffier version of the original Starcraft, they’ve also thrown in a lot of interactive terrain objects. There’s cinematics between every single mission and it’s very obvious how much work Blizzard has put into improving their machinima. You’ll need a fairly good machine to run all the effects and rendering though. There’s some very advanced graphics (mostly in the between mission phases) and my computer has tripped up a couple of times already on them (but only for a moment). The big on I’ve noticed so far though is whenever I Alt+Tab to the desktop to look at something else (Manhunt or A4A usually), I can’t re-maximize the screen properly. That is, the screen will come back up but it’s completely black and the menu never re-appears. I can minimize it again and force the game to close from the desktop though. Needless to say, it’s frustrating to have to log out and log back in just to check email or anything else. I haven’t tried this from a mission yet so not sure if that will be the case from there.

Battle.net 2.0: You have to be logged in and connected in order to play the single player game. WTF? This seems like a ridiculous requirement since, as far as I can tell, it’s only for the tracking and posting of achievements. Stu’s boyfriend mentioned this morning (or was it last night?) on Facebook that his Battle.net account had been hacked and requires and authenticator to log in. This completely prevents him from playing the game. There was mention online of a way to play as a Guest but what’s the point in that? His achievements and advancement won’t be saved once his account is unhacked and he’ll have to start over again. Otherwise, the interface is pretty easy to navigate. I can’t, for the life of me, find how to modify my profile. Can it even be done? There doesn’t seem to be any options for it. At the very least I’d like to change my avatar from the generic one.

Part 1 of 3 installments: Blizzard departed from the norm and broke Starcraft II into 3 separate games. Wings of Liberty is just the Terran campaign but instead of 10 missions, it’s close to 30. The Zerg and Protoss campaigns are scheduled to be released as their own games as well (or perhaps as expansions) but with another $60ish pricetag. Quote honestly, I’m mostly ok with this. Though $120 for the next two segments seems a little steep since they’re not releasing a new game, just more missions. Granted though, they will be fully scripted with cinematics and another ~30 missions per faction. It’s a tough call but then again, I’m speculating that each of the following campaigns will cost another $60.

Outside the campaign: There’s a separate ‘challenge’ series of missions that test your strategies and force you to find which units are strong/weak vs other units. I’ve only played one so far but it was interesting and enlightening as far as strategy goes. It also looks like they have a series for each faction. This is the part of the game I believe is meant to prep players for the online multiplayer matches.

Summary: A very well made game. Some graphical hangups and some dialogue/character scripts that drive me up the wall but the core game is solid (as pretty much all Blizzard games are). Given the shear amount of content available and the options for multiplayer, this could easily tide me over until the new Fallout game in October.

Some of you may know, some of you may not, but I just got back from my trip to gay mecca a few days ago. I went for my 21st birthday, stayed for a week, and had a blast! Thank god the people of San Francisco are so awesome, and not surprisingly, they all have calves seemingly chiseled out of marble. I haven’t been able to write for CHB for about two weeks because I’ve been on my vacation, without internet, and it’s slow going getting back into the groove of things, but I will persevere like a twink trying to get a free martini at Neighbors.

P.S. To all my nerds out there, is it just me, or is Valkyrie Profile for the DS one of the hardest rpg strategies ever? It could just be me, but it’s a grade A hetero of a bitch.

So I love RuPaul’s Drag Race. I also am a fan of RuPaul. She’s made a wildly successful career out of being a moderately talented singer and a generally over-the-top person (in or out of drag). And apparently she’s a writer, as we are frequently and aggressively reminded on any of her shows. I think she’s pretty entertaining and she (or her stylists) definitely know how to turn out a good look. I also love that she’s done a lot of work to bring drag into the mainstream media, especially on television. So generally, I’m a fan.

So I anticipated RuPaul’s Drag U (her newer television show, hot on the heels of Drag Race) with some excitement. The premise of Drag Race was for twelve or so drag queens to compete in an America’s Next Top Model-type competition. But with lip-syncing and more cattiness. It’s a fun show and it’s frequently hysterical. RuPaul’s Drag U is a make-over show hosted by the titular queen and with the assistance of a coterie of favorite (or otherwise out-of-work) queens from the previous two seasons of Drag Race. The concept is to take down-trodden and homely women and give them fabulous drag make-overs and inject them with self-esteem and fierceness. Watch out Oprah, RuPaul’s gunning for you. As a concept it didn’t strike me as anything other than fun and harmless.

…and then I actually watched the show. The season premier was yesterday (available to watch on Logo) and it was kind of awful. First of all, the women they put on the show are not only “homely” and decidedly un-fabulous but they’re also generally very, very butch (although they are all ostensibly straight). The impression given is that in order to make their lives better and to improve their self-esteem they need to learn how to walk in heels, work a dress and wear make-up. Right off in the first ten minutes of the show I was offended and appalled that these women would subject themselves to the implication that the root of their failures is their lack of traditional feminine inclinations.

The show got a little better after that. There was much talk on RuPaul’s part of, “you ARE a beautiful woman” and other Oprah-inspired affirmations and the queens helping the women with their make-overs were generally supportive and doing their best to make a positive change for the women. And then the end of the show is their “Drag-uation” where the women are critiqued by a panel of judges on their walk, their look, their bearing and their lip-sync/dance number. And the bile rose in my throat again. Take three women who are depressed about their lack of feminine wiles, tell them they are beautiful and deserve all the happiness in the world and then when they step out in a dress, heels and make-up for the first time in twenty-odd years, have a panel of judges critique them and give them a letter grade. The producers of the show no doubt wanted to give the show some suspense by making it a competition. Whichever woman makes the most successful turn-around from dowdy wretch to fabulous queen wins and gets a prize. The other two are now confirmed in their fears that they’re failures as women and they’ve had a panel of judges tell them exactly why. “All the elegance and poise of a grizzly bear” was one of the critiques given to a woman from a panel judge.

RuPauls’ Drag Race is about drag queens competing to show that they’re the best, most versatile and most resilient queen on the show. They go into it with confidence and generally an aggressive will to win mentality. Judging a person in that situation is commonplace on reality tv. Television overflows with such cat-fighting, back-stabbing, sideways looks, and elimination rounds with suspenseful music and dramatic commercial breaks. However, to purposefully take three women who are vulnerable and unsure of themselves and put them before a panel of judges to tell them what is wrong with their expression of womanhood is discomfiting and irresponsible.

Once you watch this video, you’ll have to agree with me, at least ONE of them is gay and got the others to do it. There’s just no way these boys are going to do all of this just because they’re bored one day after school. I swear one of them has a hardon during the entire process.

Either way, it’s a pretty damn funny video it you haven’t seen it, whether they’re gay or not. Leave your vote in the comments below, cause mine is certainly that at least one is craving dick like a gay man at a WWF match.

I’m considering taking a page from Khaos’ comic book (see link to the right) and creating exclusive XXX desktop images for sale. They’d be pretty high quality, detailed pieces, so hopefully they’d be worth a buck or two. Check out the image after the jump and tell me, is that something you’d like to see more of? (NSFW)

Ok, The Last Airbender. In short, not as bad as the reviews, but definately not as good as it could have been. The visual effects were gorgeous, of course. Though putting it in 3D was unnecessary. The acting was…alright. The guy who played Sokka was hooooooooot but was kind of flat. But then again, he’s in Twilight so you can’t really expect him to be THAT good. Hated the girl who played Katara. She didn’t bother to ever explain her actions and almost always have a vacant stare. I also didn’t like how everyone was so friggin’ grim. The show came with a hefty dose of humor and the movie definately did not. From a purely entertainment point of view, however, I was quite pleased. Details were skipped, of course, but the story could be followed fairly easily. Go and see it, but don’t expect it to follow the show exactly. Almost no movies based off of shows or books do.

Also went and saw Team America last night Central Cinema. What else can you say about that movie aside from FUCK YEAH!
